At an awards ceremony hosted by well known food critic and Masterchef judge William Sitwell, held in York earlier this week, The Unruly Pig won the ‘Best Front of House Team of the Year’ award at the Estrella Damm U.K. Top 50 Gastropub Award 2018.
This awards comes on the back of being recommended by the likes of Michelin and Hardens foodie guides, various national press such as The Sunday Times and being named as ‘Best UK Top 5 Pub for Walkers by the Financial Times’. In addition The Unruly Pig has been awarded ‘Best Pub in Suffolk 2016/17’ by the National Pub and Bar Awards.
The Unruly Pig employs a team of 35 people including ten chefs. The front of house team is led by Restaurant Manager, Amy Challis. Owner Brendan Padfield explains: “Amy Challis is my heroine. I so proud for her and the rest of our magnificent front of house team at The Unruly Pig. There’s no magic formula for success. It is down to sheer hard work but also a passion and determination to try to be the best. I always tell the team that they should be themselves and bring some genuine warmth and welcome to all our customers. Great food and no pretension. That’s what we are about and that is why I believe we have won this much coveted award. I am absolutely thrilled.”
He adds: “It was privilege enough to have been shortlisted as a finalist but to have joined such an array of restaurant royalty at the awards was a real honour. I must admit to have been a little star struck to see such an array of nationally known names. To then go on and actually win this award against such tough but worthy national completion, frankly, left me a little speechless …and that is saying something for a former lawyer.” After practising as a solicitor for over thirty years, Brendan eventually fulfilled his life’s ambition to open a restaurant in March 2015 , taking over the Bromeswell premises that used to be home to The British Larder.
