JMS recruit ‘star’ graduate!

It’s not just football teams that are making big signings at the moment, local company, JMS have made one of their own. The team are proud to announce they have snapped up their very own rising star, Alex Wilkinson.

Alex was busy making a name for himself during his placement at Abacus Design, so when JMS acquired the structural and civil engineering consultancy, Director of JMS London, Graham Chapman, was quick to spot the young talent in their ranks, and didn’t waste time offering him a Graduate Structural Engineer position.

As Graham says: “We have really expanded our reach to a national scale in recent years, and whilst it’s our big acquisitions and projects that tend to make the news, the real secret of our success is in the people we have on our teams. And when I read about Alex’s achievements whilst still at university, I knew he belonged at JMS. He is made of the right stuff, and I think you will be hearing a lot more about him in the future.”

London born Alex graduated with a first-class degree in Civil Engineering from Loughborough University, receiving the highest mark for his year. He also won a coveted Sponsors BEng Civil Engineering Design Project Prize for his conceptual and structural designs for a coffee production facility, and assisted as a Structural Designer and Sustainability Consultant on the concept development of a new Student Union building at the University.

As Alex says himself; “Getting involved in the SU construction was great experience, and I really learned a lot about collaboration during this project, working alongside student architects and quantity surveyors. We regularly had group meetings to coordinate the designs, and also had client expectations to meet. It really set me up for the work I did with Abacus, and I can’t wait to continue my career with JMS.”

So what does JMS’ young superstar like to do when he’s not involved in one of JMS’ many projects?

“I love keeping fit, I’m keen on  jujitsu, rugby and kickboxing. I also love a good music festival, and going out with friends to the pub. It’s been a busy few years to be honest, so next thing on my list is visiting family, making up for not seeing them much whilst I’ve been busy getting my career off the ground. I have even find time to go interrailing around Europe before I start at JMS, as I love experiencing new cultures.”

And with JMS breaking away from the construction industry’s reputation for long working hours and high-pressure deadlines (company staff get every second Friday off work, for example), Alex will get to experience a great working culture once he’s returned from his travels in August. With many more ambitious and exciting projects lined up throughout the UK, he’ll also have plenty of opportunity to develop and grow as JMS does too.
