JMS Consulting Engineers are building an ambitious future for East Anglia

JMS Consulting Engineers provide civil and structural engineering expertise across East Anglia and beyond. Here Director, Daniel Staines (pictured), talks about JMS, their role in shaping East Anglia’s landscape, and creating jobs for the area….

When I started JMS in 1997, I wanted to bring the creativity of the architectural eye to the technical innovation of engineering. And deliver this as a tempting package for investors, owners and developers.

Humble foundations

I did my A-levels at Woodbridge School, and our first office was the house I shared with my wife, I remember we had a fax machine on the landing.

I’ve seen many a new building rise through JMS’s input, and I’ve also seen the business rise beyond those foundations. Last year alone we set up new offices in as far flung places as Limassol and sunny Leicester. We’ve also got networked offices in London, the Midlands, the North West and Greece.

You can’t say we don’t like to get around, and that’s why we gave our staff Fitbits at our 20th anniversary celebrations. We’re encouraging our people to focus on their health, but it’s also a reminder to get our feet on the ground in those areas, and understand the local issues that affect development projects.

Constructing employment in Suffolk

We’ve kept our head office in Suffolk, of course, with newly built premises at Brightwell Barns, near Woodbridge. And one of the most exciting projects for me is our new office in Norwich. This is our third in the East Anglia area, and that means we now have solid coverage of civil and structural engineering services on our home ground.

There’s a lot of commercial and residential development going on in Suffolk. We’ve already hired new staff, and we’ll be taking on more as our contracts expand. The local construction industry in general is thriving, with an estimated 20,000 new construction roles being created in the next five years in East Anglia. That’ll be great for the local economy, and we’ll be providing a good chunk of those new jobs.

We’re heavily involved in the civil and structural side of Port One, St. James Park, a huge new warehouse development just outside Ipswich. We’ll also be doing a lot of work in Ipswich itself. Not to mention other major projects in Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth, and we’re poised to support the biggest residential property building boom since the 70s. It’s going to be an exciting and fruitful time for Suffolk and we’re delighted to be at the heart of it.
