Plans have been submitted for the redevelopment of Arras Square, Ipswich including seating with a mythical creatures theme, chosen by public vote.
This means that mythical creatures – inspired by engravings in an old timber beam on Arras Square – will be engraved into the seating.
Erect Architects have been working with the Council to develop the design which includes new seating, paving, drainage, lighting, CCTV, litter bins and trees as well as a new mural.
The latest vote on the engraving for the seating follows a poll carried out by the Ipswich Star, which selected Arras Square as the public’s top priority for improvements. The scheme is being funded by Ipswich Borough Council.
A decision on the planning application is expected in the late summer. If the scheme is approved it is anticipated that work will start in the autumn and be completed in autumn 2024.
Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said:
“It’s clear that local people want us to improve Arras Square. This scheme will deliver a much-improved space where people can enjoy their surroundings and visit local businesses, including the new music venue at St Stephen’s Church opening in a few weeks.”
