Ipswich Aquatic Centre Reaches Key Milestone

Ipswich Borough Council’s transformational proposal for a state-of-the-art Aquatic Centre has received planning permission, marking a significant step forward in the Council’s ambitious masterplan to rejuvenate Ipswich and support a more connected, vibrant community.

Following an extensive consultation period, supported by Suffolk County Council and Ipswich Town Football Club, this community-focused development will significantly enhance the public realm around Portman Road.

The new Sports Facilities, in time, will replace Crown Pools and will feature advanced, inclusive facilities promoting health, wellbeing, and sporting excellence, while also championing eco-friendly principles by targeting an “Excellent” BREEAM sustainability rating.

With planning consent now in place, the project will move into the technical design phase, during which the detailed architectural and engineering designs are produced. By the end of this phase which may take up to 12 months a detailed design programme will have been produced and a timeline for the construction phase will be agreed along with the final funding strategy consisting of what is expected to be a combination of public and private sector investment.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, says:

“This approval is a momentous achievement, representing another leap forward in making our vision a reality. This project will become a community jewel, a symbol of how sports, leisure, and communal wellbeing are valued in Ipswich. Our focus now shifts to implementing the next phases of the project and continuing to attract forward-thinking investors who share our commitment to a healthier, more vibrant Ipswich.”

Councillor John Cook, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Sport, says:

“This is a huge step towards providing modern, accessible, and sustainable sports facilities that will serve residents for generations to come. The new Aquatic Centre is not just a replacement for Crown Pools it is a significant upgrade that puts health, inclusion, and community pride at its core.”

With planning consent secured, the next stage involves the development of a comprehensive investment strategy.
