New affordable homes in Newmarket transform rundown garage sites

Today, Flagship Homes will hand over sixteen much-needed affordable homes in Newmarket. Its latest development, supported by Homes England and Gipping Construction, has transformed two old rundown garage sites with the introduction of modern designed homes.

Flagship’s development in Windsor Road, Newmarket, offers thirteen homes at ‘Social Rent’, meaning that tenants will pay rent which is around 50% cheaper than the average price charged by private landlords. Three shared ownership homes have also been newly built, where people can part buy, and part rent their home.

Tony Tann, Managing Director of Flagship Homes (development) said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming new tenants to Windsor Road. We want our new tenants to make their house a home – that’s why we build all our homes to a high standard. The rented homes have the addition of flooring throughout and blinds on the windows, and the Shared Ownership homes have been finished to a full market sale specification. Our homes are not just places to live, but places to love.”

Making homes available and affordable for all is easy to say, but hard to deliver on. House prices in Newmarket are on average £300,000 – making it difficult for local people to access a home.

Tann continued: “This development is creating opportunities for people and plays a key part in helping us to fulfil our vision of solving the housing crisis in the East of England.”

Kathryn and Paul, who have bought one of the new shared ownership homes said: “We can’t quite believe how lucky we are to be able to afford a four-bedroom house that’s perfect in every way for our family. Shared ownership has made this dream possible. The area is walking distance to our children’s schools and very close to the town centre which were both essential for us. Flagship has made the whole process very easy and are always at the end of the phone to offer help or advice”

Flagship’s development team invited Councillors and Strategic Housing Officers from West Suffolk Council to the new development after receiving so much support for the new homes.

Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, Cabinet Member for Housing at West Suffolk Council, said: “We know that there’s high demand for housing in West Suffolk and that supply and demand does impact on house prices. It is fantastic that Flagship has delivered these much-needed affordable homes in Newmarket. The vast majority are at social rent levels as well three for shared ownership. There is a good mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, and the quality of this housing sets a benchmark, particularly with space standards, that we would gladly see others follow.”

There are a lot of challenges in building new homes, but by bringing more affordable homes to the area and making home ownership more accessible, Flagship can not only provide homes, but create sustainable communities for all.
