Urban pollution and the effect on your skin

Urban pollution is a real issue in today’s society as recently highlighted in the media, but is not exclusive to built up areas only. All around us wherever we live there are real concerns with pollution and, perhaps surprisingly, indoor pollution can be a problem too.

Living in heavily polluted areas such as cities and big towns can age your skin by 10% compared to living in the country. The sun is the obvious villain when it comes to ageing skin with it’s damaging UV rays but other pollutants include smoke, car exhausts and VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) that impact on indoor air quality.

Skin is our largest organ, making it a target that allows the penetration of exogenous agents into the body. Pollution particles sometimes are 20 times smaller than your pores and they can make their way into the deep layers of the epidermis causing dehydration and inflammation. It can also lead to a loss of elasticity and firmness.

It’s also true that the more sugar you have in your bloodstream (bye, bye wine!) the older you’ll look. It may also affect what type of collagen you can build. Oxidative stress, caused by pollution is also  proven to cause glycation. Glycation occurs when sugar molecules stop circulation and bind to a protein-like collagen, destroying its function.
