What your housekeeper does that you don’t want to do

Employing someone to take care of your holiday let and trust that they will provide the service they promised when you first met them can be daunting.

Building trust and being able to communicate with them is crucial. A good review is not only a reflection on your holiday let, but also the housekeeper and their business.

Sarah, owner of As You Wish Services, gives her top tips for delivering an outstanding cleaning and housekeeping service:

First impressions count!

You only get one shot at this, so you need to look over a freshly cleaned property, like you are looking at it for the first time. You should ask yourself would you be happy to stay here? Your property needs to be clean, tidy and smell nice. Cushions should be neatly arranged, and everything in its place to make your guests feel at ease when they first arrive.

Ensure the fridge and freezer are clean

Remove any leftover food that may have been left in good will by the previous occupants. You want to ensure that self-catering is a pleasurable experience, so its vital that the pots and pans are checked, and everything is as it should be.

Windows should be cleaned regularly

People often pick the area they want to stay in because of the views so its essential that you show case the views off perfectly. Any small person shaped hand smears or dog shaped smudges should be wiped-off the glass.

Clean spaces, inside and out

As we hit the warmer weather you need to ensure that any outside area is clean and tidy. Patios should be clean and free from leaves or moss, and the condition of your garden furniture should also be checked. This is an area that is often given feedback.

Provide essential cleaning products

Leave clear instructions on your expectations on arrival and departure. For example, what they do with their rubbish, where the local bottle bank is etc. This encourages guests to take care of the holiday let.

It is so important for holiday lets to maintain high cleaning standards and have a reliable housekeeper; Sarah explains:

“Having a good housekeeper is important when running a holiday let and keeping it ticking over nicely for any upcoming arrivals. There should be no evidence of the previous guests and it is so important to check fridges, bins, social areas etc.

Your housekeeper should report any breakages and ensure the maintenance is kept on top of by letting you know if any DIY needs doing. A holiday let does not run itself and the amount of time it takes to clean a home from top to bottom can vary greatly. Let alone without sorting all the bedding and towels etc.

As the owner of a busy holiday rental management company, I can’t tell you how many times property owners say ‘I don’t know what I would do without you’ I end up being more than their housekeeper. Building rapport with your housekeeper can make for a happy, confident and stress-free holiday let business”.
