NEW PLAY FROM IPSWICH BASED RED ROSE CHAIN THEATRE COMPANY

This Halloween, Red Rose Chain Theatre Company are bringing audiences an explosive new play, The Ungodly, by Joanna Carrick.

Set on the Stour estuary in Mistley, East Anglia, The Ungodly explores the events which led to the terrifying witch hunts led by Mathew Hopkins, Witchfinder General in 1645. The play is inspired by new evidence suggesting that Hopkins’ own family tragedies were a catalyst for his reign of terror. It explores the reality of good people being drawn into a movement which persuades them to do terrible things and draws parallels with the polarised world we live in today.

The Ungodly is written and directed by critically acclaimed playwright and Artistic Director of Red Rose Chain, Joanna Carrick. Jo is celebrated for her historical plays including Fallen In Love (Tower of London – “you fail to answer this summons to the Tower at your peril. It’s a real coup” Dominic Cavendish, Telegraph) and Put Out The Lights (Avenue Theatre – “I think I will be haunted by this play” 5*s, Libby Purves, TheatreCat).

“I am so excited to bring this play and the people that inhabit it to life. I wrote it in lockdown, exploring one of the darkest chapters in our history, which set precedents for the Salem witch trials which feature in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. The story is heart breaking and terrifying and also frighteningly modern.” – Joanna Carrick, Artistic Director/writer

This play is the culmination of a wider project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund that has brought together Red Rose Chain’s community companies and professional artists to explore this local heritage.

Audiences can see The Ungodly at The Avenue Theatre, Ipswich from the 24 October to the 11th November 2023. Tickets start from £12 and are available from Red Rose Chain’s box office on 01473 603388 or www.redrosechain.com
