Mother’s Day is just round the corner on 31st March. Is your mum the get-up-and-go type? Or perhaps she’s an avid walker or hiker? There are plenty of inspirational and family-friendly days out, suitable for all types of Mums to consider in The Rough Guide to Accessible Britain.
The revamped The Rough Guide to Accessible Britain, now in its 11th year, offers days out reviews and details of physical access to facilities as well as information for visitors with more hidden conditions, such as autism and mental illness. The guide includes reviews of over 180 venues, there’s something for everyone.
If your mother is a nature lover, there is a perfect spot to take her in the heart of Northamptonshire. The beautiful Brixworth Country Park offers both locals and visitors an accessible space suitable for picnics or strolls in the woodlands. There are two children’s playgrounds onsite with hard gravel paths and ramps. There are also three hard surfaced short circular routes (Kestrel, Lapwing, Skylark) that are all signed and colour-coded for easy navigation.
Boost her creativity with a trip to Victorian tea merchant Frederick John Horniman’s collection of curiosities and anthropological eccentricities at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London. The panoramic views on top of Forest Hill looking over south London are not to be missed. You can also join in on free interactive sessions, family workshops, short courses, events such as African drumming and visits to the beehive.
Outdoor-loving Mums can make the most of the glorious golden sand on the Derry coast. It is completely free for pedestrians and only costs a few pounds to take your car onto the beach for an accessible seaside experience (visitors are even allowed to drive onto the sand). Depending on the time of year, you may spot butterflies, wild orchids, pansies and thyme flourishing among the dunes, plus seals in the sea.
