Wickham Market has been chosen as the best dressed community for it’s support in welcoming the OVO Energy Tour of Britain. Retailers and Businesses have been busy decorating their windows with a tour-related theme to welcome the race which comes through the district on Friday 8th September.
On the day of the tour the town has organised entertainment on the Market Hill which includes screened live coverage of the race, a pop up pub, competitions on Watt Bikes and Cycle Revolution, refreshments, food from local businesses throughout the day and live music in the evening.
The winning Individual Best Dressed Business also came from the village, with Inspirations taking the award and the prize of two tickets to the VIP hospitality for the finish of the race in Aldeburgh.
The emporium shop celebrated its first anniversary in June and provides space for small retailers and start-ups to sell a wide range of gifts, clothing and accessories.
Owned and run by the community, the shop have decorated their window with a bicycle and displayed historical photos of cycling in the town. Designed by Wendy Smith, the shop’s window displays are changed regularly to create eye-catching displays.
The competition was judged by Cllrs TJ Haworth-Culf and Geoff Holdcroft.
Cllr Geoff Holdcroft, cabinet member for Economic Development at Suffolk Coastal, said: “Thanks to all the businesses and communities who took part they really did a fantastic job.
“I’m very proud to see how the communities have got behind the Tour this year. Inspirations really did a wonderful display and it was lovely to see how all the retailers in the shop came together to decorate their window.
“We both agreed Wickham Market deserved to win because of the great community spirit they’ve created and their hard work in organising such a fun-filled day of activities on the day of the race.”
Colin Owens, Town Team Chairman, said: “We’re pleased to win both awards as it recognises the efforts of the whole community in celebrating the arrival of this prestigious race.
