Layrd Design beat the odds to turn 2020 into a winning year

As a commercial interior design business, Cambridge-based Layrd Design would have been forgiven for writing off 2020 as soon as COVID struck. After all, their core customer base of commercial space has been hit extremely hard by the lockdowns and restrictions of the last 12 months.

Busines Owner and Director, Will Mayes, explains: “At the beginning of 2020 we had just launched our workplace concept competition, giving businesses across East Anglia the chance to win an interior design consultation worth £3000. We were gearing up to start work on a number of exciting development projects across the region, and pretty much overnight those plans were derailed.”

In order to come up with a strong plan to navigate the upheaval and uncertainty, Will turned to Business Coach, Philip Budd, for guidance.

“By quickly seeking advice and guidance from Phil Budd – through his Business Growth Programme, I was able to keep the business on track, learn more about the intricacies of running a successful business and put in place various processes so that we can continue to grow, despite the upheaval.” Will explained.

Will and his team quickly adapted to virtual briefings and site visits to enable them to continue working and also uncovered a new niche for the business with Will launching a new venture to run alongside Layrd Design.

“We have all spent so much time in our homes recently that people are realising their spaces need to work differently. ‘Layrd at Home’, our new design service, has been developed to help businesses and individuals create inspiring, functional spaces in their own homes.”

“What could have been a disastrous year for us has actually been an incredibly successful one. As well as completing the Business Growth and WELL practitioner programmes, to better support the team, we have expanded the team with another junior designer!”

As 2021 opens up Will is positive that there are great times ahead for Layrd Design, and pays tribute to his business coach for helping him to defy the odds and grow his business in the midst of the pandemic.

“Despite everything that has been against us we have strengthened our business and made plans to launch a new one! Phil’s guidance has been invaluable.”

Business Coach Philip Budd’s 2021 Business Growth Programme is aimed at businesses who want to take their business to the next level. The next group is launching shortly.
