“Address skills shortages issues now” urges growing Suffolk firm

Directors at a Suffolk business success story that has bucked the trend by growing considerably during the COVID19 pandemic have been left surprised at how difficult it is proving to be to fill a well-paid vacancy.

SMART Garden Rooms, Offices & Studios, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of quality outside buildings, who has been trading since 2006, has not only held onto all of its staffing roles pre-pandemic, but has recruited no fewer than nine new roles since the summer of 2020, as more people take up the option of sustained working from home.

As the demand for Garden offices grows, SMART continues to grow to meet demand. The Thurston-based company has been recruiting for a garden room installer for a while, but their recruitment needs are much larger than anticipated.

The role is a well-paid one and involves travel to multiple nationwide locations each week assembling, installing and commissioning the company’s buildings to the highest standards within agreed timescales.

SMART will provide all necessary training to get the successful applicant up and running to the market-leading standards set by the company.

Matt Moss, managing director at SMART, said: “There is a real irony here. We are a rapidly expanding manufacturer that is riding the boom in home working, but we are struggling to fill this vital role.

“We know that there is still something of a skills shortage in our sector, which is why we are offering a full and intensive training package for the candidate with the right core experience and potential. Given the level of unemployment at the moment due to Covid19, it would be a great career change for an adaptable person”.

“I’m aware that other manufacturers in the county and beyond are in a similar situation, which makes me think that the country’s recovery from the effects COVID19 will be held back by a lack of suitably skilled labour.

“Businesses, Government and training providers need to be addressing these shortages now,, before they have a major impact not just on individual firms such as ours, but on the whole economy.”
