Red Rose Chain’s Theatre in the Forest returns to Sutton Hoo near Woodbridge this Summer with ‘The Winter’s Tale’

Suffolk’s biggest and best loved outdoor theatre (produced by Ipswich theatre company, Red Rose Chain) returns this summer to Sutton Hoo, the National Trust’s world famous site near Woodbridge for another unforgettable summer of Shakespeare. Over 8,000 people saw last year’s production of Macbeth as Red Rose Chain returned to live theatre and thousands were turned away as all shows were completely sold out. Very much part of the Suffolk calendar Theatre in the Forest attracts audiences from far and wide – 30% of those who attended in 2023 came from outside the county.

‘If you go down to the woods this summer, you’re in for a big surprise!  Shakespeare’s greatest tale of jealously, love and forgiveness will leave you spellbound as we travel to the magical land of Bohemia for this vibrant production of The Winter’s Tale.’

Theatre in the Forest is famed for making Shakespeare accessible and fun for all, staying true to the text while interjecting high energy, dance, music, colour and magic!  Alongside the cast will again be puppets from world renowned Nick Barnes Puppets known for their incredible designs for Life of Pi in the West End. The show is completely family friendly – ideal for all ages (including the very young).  Artistic Director Joanna Carrick and Producer David Newborn have been introducing scores of people to Shakespeare for over 25 years, delighting those who already love his plays and encouraging thousands of students with their studies.

This year’s production of ‘The Winter’s Tale’ may not be a Shakepeare play everyone is familiar with but with Theatre in the Forest that really doesn’t matter.  Theatre in the Forest promises a fabulous evening which can be combined with an early evening visit to Sutton Hoo (included in ticket price).  Picnics are a must and can be supplemented from Sutton’s Hoo Cafe and pop up bar.
